IDENTITY CRISIS: Schizophrenia in GSUSA

When the world is going their way and everything is peachy-keen, GSUSA touts WAGGGS as our wonderful, international association, full of Girl Scout and Girl Guide sisters. BUT WHEN THERE'S TROUBLE, this is what GSUSA sends out in e-mail correspondence [emphasis added]:

"Girl Scouts of the USA and WAGGGS are two separate organizations.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is comprised of 145 member organizations, including Girl Scouts of the USA. As a member of the World Association Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, GSUSA works in collaboration with the World Bureau and sister Member Organizations throughout the world...

Though we work in collaboration with the World Bureau and other Member Organizations, each Member Organization creates its own programs and pursues advocacy efforts based on the needs and issues affecting girls in their individual countries."

BUT HERE'S THE PROBLEM: every American Girl Scout membership triggers GSUSA to make a payment to WAGGGS as part of our Association with it each year. Every American Girl Scout, Leader, Co-leader and paid representative wears the WAGGGS pin, as we have been told from the beginning that it is part of our uniform. American Girl Scouts, families and supporters are asked to give on Thinking Day to the Juliette Lowe World Friendship Fund. Guess where that money goes? To WAGGGS. GSUSA pays $12,000 a year to WAGGGS just to contribute to the chalet and cabana properties.

We are part of WAGGGS, so WAGGGS is part of us, isn't it? So how is it, GSUSA can claim that WAGGGS is separate when it sponsors workshops that promote explicit sex education to minors? How is it separate from our identity when "GIRL SCOUTS" are the last two words in the WAGGGS name? When WAGGGS is a Full Member of a Socialist website, how is it that we are not helping fund that membership?

HonestGirlScouts.com is exploring the answers to such questions. We invite you to come to your own conclusions. We invite you to let us know when we have incorrect information. But most importantly, we ask you to "Discover -- Connect -- and Take Action," just like the new Girl Scout activist mantra says. You may discover that Girl Scouts are not what you originally signed up to support.

The intent of this website is to call for the reform of GSUSA back to its traditional foundation of helping build girls with good character. The original charter uses the words "purity" and "honesty" to describe its purpose. If Girl Scouts is to stay a viable institution past its 100th birthday in 2012, it will have to 1) remove sex education from its permission and curricula and; 2) sever all ties with WAGGGS, from funding to co-sponsoring of events. These two actions are the current goal of HonestGirlScouts.com.
